Long/Short, Fat/Thin - Latest Challenge Quilt

Today was reveal day for our art quilt challenge group Art Quilts Around the World. The theme for this challenge was Opposites Attract.

After a couple of flase starts I decided to use complimentary colours, opposites on the colour wheel. I have been in an orange mood lately so the first colour I selected was orange and I found a lovely bright blue to use.

I used raw edge applique and batik fabric for this quilt.

Introducing the wonderful letter

HiddenEverything is hidden on an X-ray until viewed in the correct light.

Famous: Excalibur - I'm sure everyone has heard of the sword in the stone (thanks Google)

Alive:  Xerces, blue butterfly (thanks Google)

Crosses In Quilts: My Irish Chain Quilt is one of my favourites. Made from 'ugly' fabrics it        turned out much better that I dreamed.

Out of Asia Challenge

This weekend is the publication of our latest challenge quilts with the group Art Quilts Around the World.

I made this quilt for my middle daughter & her partner.

The Khanda is the Sikh emblem, it consists of three objects:

  • Two swords, signify the spiritual and secular forces influencing the soul.
  • A double edged sword symbolizes the ability of truth to cut through the duality of illusion.
  • A circlet represents unity, a sense of being at one with infinity

Below is a close-up of the quilting, fun to do but time consuming.

The background is  leftover over fabric from a recent project. There is a picture in the  most recent scatterdays post.

Scatterdays - Letter D

This week we have the dastardly letter D, it has been a challenge and fun trying to come up with the required photos.

Something Humorous, Feet, Furniture and A Quilty Dispaly.

Something Humorous:

My son-in-law Dean dressed as 'Paulie' from the movie Juno. Daughter was 8 months pregnant at the time and went as Juno. I'm not allowed to show her photo here and had to hide Dean's face.

Feet:

Duck feet  can be used for many different things - walking, swimming and eating!

I have to thank our friend  Google for these pictures.

 Furniture:

Drawers from my lovely Singer Treadle Machine. This is one of the first gifts my husband gave me after we were married.

A Quilty Display :

This first group of quilts have all been made for challenges. Lots of fun and a strong learning curve.

Below are some of my larger quilts. If you can't guess I really love scrappy quilts.

Scatterdays Week 4 - Letter T

Tasty, Tiny, Terrifying and Threads

A TASTY lunch consists of tasty cheese, tuna and tomatoes on toast.

TINY Teddy biscuits, a favourite of my girls when they were much younger

TERRIFYING - Black Saturday Busfires Feb 7, 2009. These pictures were taken at around 4pm, a slight wind had change and smoke blanketed the sky. The fire was less than 10kms from us as the crow flies.

I was dreading the forecast wind change that would bring embers etc down on our property.
Later that night with the power, land line and mobile phones out we sat glued to the transistor radio.

Sitting by torch and candle light we noticed a dark shape on the floor.

A tiger snake had invited itself inside, I don't know what was more terrifying, the fire or trying to find a venomous snake by torchlight.

I am not waiting around if we are threatened by fires again.

THREADS

A very messy container of embroidery threads.

Dreaming In Colour - A Self Portrait

Our latest challenge 'A Self Portrait'  with Art Quilts Around the World was revealed on January 31st.

I knew nearly straight away what I wanted to do, unfortunately after selecting, cutting up and sticking down what seemed like hundreds of different coloured 3/4 inch squares I didn't like the result.

The background of this picture is my design layout, I have a habit of drawing all my ideas over the previous ones, can be rather messy at times.

So with a slight design alteration here I am:

I had a brainwave (pardon the pun) and cut new 1/4 inch squares, all different fabrics (106 of them) and vliesofixed them to the silhouette.
.
Methods used:
Free motion stitching, raw edge applique and a little gold paint for the stars.

Our next challenge is titled CARNIVAL and I've already started collecting bits and pieces of bling to use.

Scatterdays Week 3 - Letter Q

Is our letter this week. The categories are:A plant, Night time, Something healthy and Something quick.

A Plant: This is our poor old quince tree, only two quinces could be seen this morning. In another week or so they will both be gone. The possums love them.

Night Time just had to be a quilt, this is one of my favourite quilts on the spare bed.

Something Healthy: Quinoa, I like to use this as a change from  rice or pasta. Makes a lovely roasted vegetable salad.

Finally Something Quick, couldn't go past my trusty old Quick Unpick, where would I be without it.

Next letter is T - Tasty, Tiny, Terrifying, Threads.

We have this little creeper growing in a pot, can anyone identify it for me?
